Citalopram-Induced Long QT Syndrome and the Mammalian Dive Reflex
While SCUBA diving, a 44-year-old Caucasian patient had an abnormal cardiac rhythm, presumably Torsade de Pointes (TdP), during the initial descent to depth. Upon surfacing, she developed ventricular fibrillation and died. The patient had been treated for mild depression for nearly a year with citalopram 60 mg per day, a drug known to cause prolonged QT interval. She had also been treated with ...

The alerts issued by regulatory agencies on the potential cardiac toxicity of citalopram and escitalopram have caused alarm among clinicians. A review of the data concerning this topic shows that the alarm should be limited to patients with a history of syncope or poisoning. As a precautionary measure, an electrocardiogram should be performed on elderly patients.
متن کاملTowards limiting QT interval prolongation and arrhythmia risk in citalopram use.
Citalopram is a serotonin-selective reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) widely used in the treatment of major depression and sometimes also anxiety-associated conditions, obsessive compulsive disorder and behavior disturbances associated with dementia [1, 2].
